The Sovereignty of God
Matthew 22:29 ...Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the
power of God.
Nahum
1:2-9 God is jealous, and the LORD avenges; The LORD avenges and is
furious. The LORD will take vengeance on His adversaries, And He
reserves wrath for His enemies; 3 The LORD is slow to anger and
great in power, And will not at all acquit the wicked. The LORD has
His way In the whirlwind and in the storm, And the clouds are the
dust of His feet. 4 He rebukes the sea and makes it dry, And dries
up all the rivers. Bashan and Carmel wither, And the flower of
Lebanon wilts. 5 The mountains quake before Him, The hills melt, And
the earth heaves at His presence, Yes, the world and all who dwell
in it. 6 Who can stand before His indignation? And who can endure
the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, And
the rocks are thrown down by Him. 7 The LORD is good, A stronghold
in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him. 8 But
with an overflowing flood He will make an utter end of its place,
And darkness will pursue His enemies. 9 What do you conspire against
the LORD? He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise
up a second time.
Isaiah 55:8-11 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your
ways My ways," says the LORD. 9 "For as the heavens are higher than
the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts
than your thoughts. 10 "For as the rain comes down, and the snow
from heaven, And do not return there, But water the earth, And make
it bring forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And bread
to the eater, 11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I
please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
Isaiah 40:28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting
God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints
nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.
I.
God is eternal, unsearchable, holy, and immutable
A. God is eternal and unsearchable
1. 1 Kings 8:12,27 Then Solomon spoke: "The LORD said He
would dwell in the dark cloud. 27 "But will God indeed
dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of
heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple
which I have built!
2. Job 5:9 Who does great things, and unsearchable,
Marvelous things without number.
3. Job 11:7-9 "Can you search out the deep things of
God? Can you find out the limits of the Almighty? 8 They
are higher than heaven; what can you do? Deeper than
Sheol; what can you know? 9 Their measure is longer than
the earth And broader than the sea.
4. Job 37:5 God thunders marvelously with His voice; He
does great things which we cannot comprehend.
5. Psalms 139:6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is high, I cannot attain it.
6. Psalms 145:3 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be
praised; And His greatness is unsearchable.
7. Psalms 147:5 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power;
His understanding is infinite.
8. Ecclesiastes 11:5 As you do not know what is the way
of the wind, Or how the bones grow in the womb of her
who is with child, So you do not know the works of God
who makes everything.
B. God is holy
1. Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect;
For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without
injustice; Righteous and upright is He.
2. 1 Samuel 2:2 "No one is holy like the LORD, For there
is none besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.
3. Job 4:17 'Can a mortal be more righteous than God?
Can a man be more pure than his Maker?
4. Job 34:10 "Therefore listen to me, you men of
understanding: Far be it from God to do wickedness, And
from the Almighty to commit iniquity.
5. Psalms 33:4 For the word of the LORD is right, And
all His work is done in truth.
6. Psalms 92:15 To declare that the LORD is upright; He
is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
7. Psalms 145:17 The LORD is righteous in all His ways,
Gracious in all His works.
8. Isaiah 45:19 I have not spoken in secret, In a dark
place of the earth; I did not say to the seed of Jacob,
'Seek Me in vain'; I, the LORD, speak righteousness, I
declare things that are right.
9. And He wants us to know it!
a. Ezekiel 39:7 "So I will make My holy name known
in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not let
them profane My holy name anymore. Then the nations
shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in
Israel.
10. Hosea 11:9 I will not execute the fierceness of My
anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim. For I am God,
and not man, The Holy One in your midst; And I will not
come with terror.
11. 1 John 1:5 This is the message which we have heard
from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in
Him is no darkness at all.
12. Revelation 15:4 Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and
glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all
nations shall come and worship before You, For Your
judgments have been manifested."
C. God is immutable (Psalms 33:10-11 The LORD brings the
counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the
peoples of no effect. 11 The counsel of the LORD stands
forever, The plans of His heart to all generations.)
1. Job 23:13-14 "But He is unique, and who can make Him
change? And whatever His soul desires, that He does. 14
For He performs what is appointed for me, And many such
things are with Him.
2. Psalms 115:3 But our God is in heaven; He does
whatever He pleases.
3. Psalms 135:5-6 For I know that the LORD is great, And
our Lord is above all gods. 6 Whatever the LORD pleases
He does, In heaven and in earth, In the seas and in all
deep places.
4. Isaiah 46:9-11 Remember the former things of old, For
I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is
none like Me, 10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things that are not yet done,
Saying, 'My counsel shall stand, And I will do all My
pleasure,' 11 Calling a bird of prey from the east, The
man who executes My counsel, from a far country. Indeed
I have spoken it; I will also bring it to pass. I have
purposed it; I will also do it.
5. Ephesians 1:11 In Him also we have obtained an
inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose
of Him who works all things according to the counsel of
His will,
6. Proverbs 21:30-31 There is no wisdom or understanding
Or counsel against the LORD. 31 The horse is prepared
for the day of battle, But deliverance is of the LORD.
7. Isaiah 14:24-27 The LORD of hosts has sworn, saying,
"Surely, as I have thought, so it shall come to pass,
And as I have purposed, so it shall stand: 25 That I
will break the Assyrian in My land, And on My mountains
tread him underfoot. Then his yoke shall be removed from
them, And his burden removed from their shoulders. 26
This is the purpose that is purposed against the whole
earth, And this is the hand that is stretched out over
all the nations. 27 For the LORD of hosts has purposed,
And who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, And
who will turn it back?"
8. Numbers 23:19 "God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said,
and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not
make it good?
9. James 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is
from above, and comes down from the Father of lights,
with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
10. Hebrews 6:16-18 For men indeed swear by the greater,
and an oath for confirmation is for them an end of all
dispute. 17 Thus God, determining to show more
abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of
His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, 18 that by two
immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to
lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for
refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.
II. God sovereignly owns and controls creation
A. His complete ownership of creation
1. 1 Chronicles 29:11-12 Yours, O LORD, is the
greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the
majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is
Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, And You are exalted
as head over all. 12 Both riches and honor come from
You, And You reign over all. In Your hand is power and
might; In Your hand it is to make great And to give
strength to all.
2. Job 34:13 Who gave Him charge over the earth? Or who
appointed Him over the whole world?
3. Psalms 50:10-12 For every beast of the forest is
Mine, And the cattle on a thousand hills. 11 I know all
the birds of the mountains, And the wild beasts of the
field are Mine. 12 "If I were hungry, I would not tell
you; For the world is Mine, and all its fullness.
B. His complete control of creation
1. Psalms 107:25,29 For He commands and raises the
stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves of the sea. 29 He
calms the storm, So that its waves are still.
2. Jeremiah 5:22 Do you not fear Me?' says the LORD.
'Will you not tremble at My presence, Who have placed
the sand as the bound of the sea, By a perpetual decree,
that it cannot pass beyond it? And though its waves toss
to and fro, Yet they cannot prevail; Though they roar,
yet they cannot pass over it.
3. Job 26:12-14 He stirs up the sea with His power, And
by His understanding He breaks up the storm. 13 By His
Spirit He adorned the heavens; His hand pierced the
fleeing serpent. 14 Indeed these are the mere edges of
His ways, And how small a whisper we hear of Him! But
the thunder of His power who can understand?"
4. Psalms 148:4-8 Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,
And you waters above the heavens! 5 Let them praise the
name of the LORD, For He commanded and they were
created. 6 He also established them forever and ever; He
made a decree which shall not pass away. 7 Praise the
LORD from the earth, You great sea creatures and all the
depths; 8 Fire and hail, snow and clouds; Stormy wind,
fulfilling His word;
III. God is sovereign over rulers and kings
A. He removes and sets up those in authority
1. Daniel 2:20-21 Daniel answered and said: "Blessed be
the name of God forever and ever, For wisdom and might
are His. 21 And He changes the times and the seasons; He
removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to
the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding.
2. Psalms 75:6-7 For exaltation comes neither from the
east Nor from the west nor from the south. 7 But God is
the Judge: He puts down one, And exalts another.

governing authorities. For there is no authority except
from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed
by God.
B. He controls those in authority
1. Proverbs 21:1 The king's heart is in the hand of the
LORD, Like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He
wishes.
2. Isaiah 31:3 Now the Egyptians are men, and not God;
And their horses are flesh, and not spirit. When the
LORD stretches out His hand, Both he who helps will
fall, And he who is helped will fall down; They all will
perish together.
3. Psalms 66:3 Say to God, "How awesome are Your works!
Through the greatness of Your power Your enemies shall
submit themselves to You.
4. Daniel 3:14-19; 4:24-37
5. Acts 2:22-23 "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus
of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles,
wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your
midst, as you yourselves also know; 23 "Him, being
delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of
God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified,
and put to death;
6. Acts 4:25-28 "who by the mouth of Your servant David
have said: 'Why did the nations rage, And the people
plot vain things? 26 The kings of the earth took their
stand, And the rulers were gathered together Against the
LORD and against His Christ.' 27 "For truly against Your
holy Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and
Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles and the people of
Israel, were gathered together 28 "to do whatever Your
hand and Your purpose determined before to be done.
a. John 19:11 Jesus answered, "You could have no
power at all against Me unless it had been given you
from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to
you has the greater sin."
7. Deuteronomy 2:24-33
8. Judges 9:23 Then God sent an evil spirit between
Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem
dealt treacherously with Abimelech:
a. Exodus 15:3 The LORD is a man of war; The LORD is
His name.
9. 2 Samuel 17:14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel
said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than
the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to
defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent
that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.
10. Isaiah 54:16 "Behold, I have created the blacksmith
Who blows the coals in the fire, Who brings forth an
instrument for his work; And I have created the spoiler
to destroy.
IV. God sovereignly creates and controls all things and events for
His own purpose and pleasure
A. All things
1. Colossians 1:16-17 For by Him all things were created
that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or dominions or
principalities or powers. All things were created
through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things,
and in Him all things consist.
2. Revelation 4:11 "You are worthy, O Lord, To receive
glory and honor and power; For You created all things,
And by Your will they exist and were created."

has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He
will bind us up.
2. Exodus 4:11 So the LORD said to him, "Who has made
man's mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the
seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the LORD?
3. Psalms 90:2-3 Before the mountains were brought
forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. 3 You
turn man to destruction, And say, "Return, O children of
men."
4. Job 5:17-18 "Behold, happy is the man whom God
corrects; Therefore do not despise the chastening of the
Almighty. 18 For He bruises, but He binds up; He wounds,
but His hands make whole.
C. Death
1. Deuteronomy 32:39 'Now see that I, even I, am He, And
there is no God besides Me; I kill and I make alive; I
wound and I heal; Nor is there any who can deliver from
My hand.
2. 1 Samuel 2:6-10 "The LORD kills and makes alive; He
brings down to the grave and brings up. 7 The LORD makes
poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up. 8 He
raises the poor from the dust And lifts the beggar from
the ash heap, To set them among princes And make them
inherit the throne of glory. "For the pillars of the
earth are the Lord's, And He has set the world upon
them. 9 He will guard the feet of His saints, But the
wicked shall be silent in darkness. "For by strength no
man shall prevail. 10 The adversaries of the LORD shall
be broken in pieces; From heaven He will thunder against
them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth. "He
will give strength to His king, And exalt the horn of
His anointed."
3. Acts 17:24-26 "God, who made the world and everything
in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not
dwell in temples made with hands. 25 "Nor is He
worshiped with men's hands, as though He needed
anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all
things. 26 "And He has made from one blood every nation
of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has
determined their preappointed times and the boundaries
of their dwellings,
4. Job 14:5 Since his days are determined, The number of
his months is with You; You have appointed his limits,
so that he cannot pass.
D. Evil and destruction
1. Isaiah 45:5-9 I am the LORD, and there is none else,
there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou
hast not known me: 6 That they may know from the rising
of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside
me. I am the LORD, and there is none else. 7 I form the
light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create
evil: I the LORD do all these things. 8 Drop down, ye
heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down
righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring
forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up
together; I the LORD have created it. 9 Woe unto him
that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive
with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to
him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work,
He hath no hands?
2. Amos 3:6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and
the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city,
and the LORD hath not done it?
3. Jeremiah 18:11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men
of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying,
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you,
and devise a device against you: return ye now every one
from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings
good.
4. Micah 2:1-3 Woe to them that devise iniquity, and
work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light,
they practice it, because it is in the power of their
hand. 2 And they covet fields, and take them by
violence; and houses, and take them away: so they
oppress a man and his house, even a man and his
heritage. 3 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold,
against this family do I devise an evil, from which ye
shall not remove your necks; neither shall ye go
haughtily: for this time is evil.
5. Ecclesiastes 7:13-14 Consider the work of God: for
who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?
14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of
adversity consider: God also hath set the one over
against the other, to the end that man should find
nothing after him.
6. Psalms 78:49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his
anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending
evil angels among them.
7. Amos 8:11-12 "Behold, the days are coming," says the
Lord GOD, "That I will send a famine on the land, Not a
famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing
the words of the LORD. 12 They shall wander from sea to
sea, And from north to east; They shall run to and fro,
seeking the word of the LORD, But shall not find it.
8. Zephaniah 1:12 "And it shall come to pass at that
time That I will search Jerusalem with lamps, And punish
the men Who are settled in complacency, Who say in their
heart, 'The LORD will not do good, Nor will He do evil.'
9. Lamentations 3:37-38 Who is he that saith, and it
cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not? 38 Out
of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and
good?

a. Job 34:10-12
8. Proverbs 16:4 The LORD hath made all things for
himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.
V.
God sovereignly ordains the actions and ultimate destiny of all
people
A. Nations
1. Habakkuk 1:5-6,12 "Look among the nations and watch;
Be utterly astounded! For I will work a work in your
days Which you would not believe, though it were told
you. 6 For indeed I am raising up the Chaldeans, A
bitter and hasty nation Which marches through the
breadth of the earth, To possess dwelling places that
are not theirs. 12 Are You not from everlasting, O LORD
my God, my Holy One? We shall not die. O LORD, You have
appointed them for judgment; O Rock, You have marked
them for correction.
2. Joshua 11:19-20 There was not a city that made peace
with the children of Israel, except the Hivites, the
inhabitants of Gibeon. All the others they took in
battle. 20 For it was of the LORD to harden their
hearts, that they should come against Israel in battle,
that He might utterly destroy them, and that they might
receive no mercy, but that He might destroy them, as the
LORD had commanded Moses.
3. God's distaste for nations taking credit for victory
a. Isaiah 37:21-29
B. Men and their actions
1. Proverbs 16:1 The preparations of the heart belong to
man, But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.
2. Proverbs 16:4 The LORD has made all for Himself, Yes,
even the wicked for the day of doom.
3. Proverbs 16:9 A man's heart plans his way, But the
LORD directs his steps.
4. Proverbs 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap, But its
every decision is from the LORD.
5. Proverbs 19:21 There are many plans in a man's heart,
Nevertheless the Lord's counsel; that will stand.
6. Proverbs 20:24 A man's steps are of the LORD; How
then can a man understand his own way?
7. Job 12:6 The tents of robbers prosper, And those who
provoke God are secure; In what God provides by His
hand.
8. Isaiah 22:11 You also made a reservoir between the
two walls For the water of the old pool. But you did not
look to its Maker, Nor did you have respect for Him who
fashioned it long ago.
9. Psalms 139:16-17 Your eyes saw my substance, being
yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written,
The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none
of them. 17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O
God! How great is the sum of them!
C. The ultimate destiny of the believer is ordained of God
1. Ephesians 1:4,5,9,11 just as He chose us in Him
before the foundation of the world, that we should be
holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having
predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to
Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 9
having made known to us the mystery of His will,
according to His good pleasure which He purposed in
Himself, 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance,
being predestined according to the purpose of Him who
works all things according to the counsel of His will,
2. Acts 13:48 Now when the Gentiles heard this, they
were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as
many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.
3. Ezekiel 34:11,12,15 'For thus says the Lord GOD:
"Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them
out. 12 "As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he
is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek out My
sheep and deliver them from all the places where they
were scattered on a cloudy and dark day. 15 "I will feed
My flock, and I will make them lie down," says the Lord
GOD.
D. The ultimate destiny of the unbeliever is ordained of God
1. Job 34:29 When He gives quietness, who then can make
trouble? And when He hides His face, who then can see
Him, Whether it is against a nation or a man alone?;
2. Matthew 11:21-27 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you,
Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in
you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have
repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 "But I say
to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in
the day of judgment than for you. 23 "And you,
Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought
down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done
in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained
until this day. 24 "But I say to you that it shall be
more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of
judgment than for you." 25 At that time Jesus answered
and said, "I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and
earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise
and prudent and have revealed them to babes. 26 "Even
so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 27 "All
things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no
one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone
know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the
Son wills to reveal Him.
* 3.How a person reacts to the sovereignty of God
determines whether they worship the God of the Bible or
their own god.
a. Luke 4:24-27 And he said, Verily, I say unto you,
No prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I
tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in
the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three
years and six months, when great famine was
throughout all the land; 26 But unto none of them
was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon,
unto a woman that was a widow. 27 And many lepers
were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet;
and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the
Syrian. 28 And all they in the synagogue, when they
heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 And
rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him
unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was
built, that they might cast him down headlong. 30
But he passing through the midst of them went his
way,
b. John 6:63-66 It is the spirit that quickeneth;
the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak
unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. 64 But
there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus
knew from the beginning who they were that believed
not, and who should betray him. 65 And he said,
Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto
me, except it were given unto him of my Father. 66
From that time many of his disciples went back, and
walked no more with him.
4. 1 Peter 2:7-9 Therefore, to you who believe, He is
precious; but to those who are disobedient, "The stone
which the builders rejected Has become the chief
cornerstone," 8 and "A stone of stumbling And a rock of
offense." They stumble, being disobedient to the word,
to which they also were appointed. 9 But you are a
chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation,
His own special people, that you may proclaim the
praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His
marvelous light;
5. Revelation 17:8,17 "The beast that you saw was, and
is not, and will ascend out of the bottomless pit and go
to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will
marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life
from the foundation of the world, when they see the
beast that was, and is not, and yet is. 17 "For God has
put it into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be
of one mind, and to give their kingdom to the beast,
until the words of God are fulfilled.
a. 2 Thessalonians 2:11-13 And for this reason God
will send them strong delusion, that they should
believe the lie, 12 that they all may be condemned
who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in
unrighteousness. 13 But we are bound to give thanks
to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord,
because God from the beginning chose you for
salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and
belief in the truth,
6. Jude 1:4 For there are certain men crept in unawares,
who were before of old ordained to this condemnation,
ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into
lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our
Lord Jesus Christ.
a. cf. Jude 1:11-13 Woe to them! For they have gone
in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error
of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion
of Korah. 12 These are spots in your love feasts,
while they feast with you without fear, serving only
themselves. They are clouds without water, carried
about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit,
twice dead, pulled up by the roots; 13 raging waves
of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering
stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness
forever.
1.) 1 Peter 1:4-5 to an inheritance
incorruptible and undefiled and that does not
fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are
kept by the power of God through faith for
salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
2.) Matthew 25:41 "Then He will also say to
those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you
cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for
the devil and his angels:
7. Romans 11:5-10 Even so then, at this present time
there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6
And if by grace, then it is no longer of works;
otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of
works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no
longer work. 7 What then? Israel has not obtained what
it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest
were blinded. 8 Just as it is written: "God has given
them a spirit of stupor, Eyes that they should not see
And ears that they should not hear, To this very day." 9
And David says: "Let their table become a snare and a
trap, A stumbling block and a recompense to them. 10 Let
their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see, and bow
down their back always."
8. John 12:37-41 But although He had done so many signs
before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the
word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he
spoke: "Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom
has the arm of the LORD been revealed?" 39 Therefore
they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: 40
"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,
Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should
understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should
heal them." 41 These things Isaiah said when he saw His
glory and spoke of Him.
9. Romans 9
a. (vs. 14) cf. Jeremiah 12:1-2 Righteous are You, O
LORD, when I plead with You; Yet let me talk with
You about Your judgments. Why does the way of the
wicked prosper? Why are those happy who deal so
treacherously? 2 You have planted them, yes, they
have taken root; They grow, yes, they bear fruit.
You are near in their mouth But far from their mind.
b. (vs. 17)
1.) cf. Exodus 7:1-5 So the LORD said to Moses:
"See, I have made you as God to Pharaoh, and
Aaron your brother shall be your prophet. 2 "You
shall speak all that I command you. And Aaron
your brother shall speak to Pharaoh to send the
children of Israel out of his land. 3 "And I
will harden Pharaoh's heart, and multiply My
signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt. 4
"But Pharaoh will not heed you, so that I may
lay My hand on Egypt and bring My armies and My
people, the children of Israel, out of the land
of Egypt by great judgments. 5 "And the
Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I
stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the
children of Israel from among them."
2.) cf. Exodus 9:12-16 But the LORD hardened the
heart of Pharaoh; and he did not heed them, just
as the LORD had spoken to Moses. 13 Then the
LORD said to Moses, "Rise early in the morning
and stand before Pharaoh, and say to him, 'Thus
says the LORD God of the Hebrews: "Let My people
go, that they may serve Me, 14 "for at this time
I will send all My plagues to your very heart,
and on your servants and on your people, that
you may know that there is none like Me in all
the earth. 15 "Now if I had stretched out My
hand and struck you and your people with
pestilence, then you would have been cut off
from the earth. 16 "But indeed for this purpose
I have raised you up, that I may show My power
in you, and that My name may be declared in all
the earth.
3.) cf. Exodus 10:1-3 Now the LORD said to
Moses, "Go in to Pharaoh; for I have hardened
his heart and the hearts of his servants, that I
may show these signs of Mine before him, 2 "and
that you may tell in the hearing of your son and
your son's son the mighty things I have done in
Egypt, and My signs which I have done among
them, that you may know that I am the LORD." 3
So Moses and Aaron came in to Pharaoh and said
to him, "Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews:
'How long will you refuse to humble yourself
before Me? Let My people go, that they may serve
Me.
c. (vs. 22) cf. Ezekiel 33:11,17-20 "Say to them:
'As I live,' says the Lord GOD, 'I have no pleasure
in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn
from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil
ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?' 17
"Yet the children of your people say, 'The way of
the LORD is not fair.' But it is their way which is
not fair! 18 "When the righteous turns from his
righteousness and commits iniquity, he shall die
because of it. 19 "But when the wicked turns from
his wickedness and does what is lawful and right, he
shall live because of it. 20 "Yet you say, 'The way
of the LORD is not fair.' O house of Israel, I will
judge every one of you according to his own ways."
VI. The final analysis: Romans 9:20-21 But indeed, O man, who are
you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who
formed it, "Why have you made me like this?" 21 Does not the potter
have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for
honor and another for dishonor?
A. Job 38:4,11,12,17-22,33-36; 40:1-14; 42:1-6
B. Romans 11:33-36 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the
wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His
judgments and His ways past finding out! 34 "For who has
known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His
counselor?" 35 "Or who has first given to Him And it shall
be repaid to him?" 36 For of Him and through Him and to Him
are all things, to whom be glory forever.
Amen.
